Emotional
Emotional Health
Your mind and your body are so intertwined that they are constantly interacting with one another. Therefore, it is virtually impossible to discuss your physical health without also discussing your mental well-being.
We all know some of the obvious mind and body connections. For example, extreme anxiety can lead to shortness of breath, nausea and diarrhea. There's also direct connection between stress and disease.
As a Naturopathic Physician, it has been my experience that all disease has some emotional component attached to it, which must be dealt with in order for complete healing to occur. I have found the following observations to be true.
- People with depression have lower immune function, which reduces their ability to fight off diseases.
- People who tend to be pessimistic and negative in nature generally tend to have worse health than those who have a more optimistic approach.
The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 90 percent of doctor visits in the U.S. are triggered by stress-related illnesses. This is a good news-bad news scenario in that those who exhibit positive feelings and emotions can dramatically improve the quality of their immune system and their overall health.
Positive thoughts and emotions can help to keep your blood pressure in check. It is also proven that laughter can boost your immune system and reduce inflammation.
Your Thoughts and Feelings are Energy.
Everything is energy. Everything. Your thoughts are energy, the computer that you're reading this Website on is energy. The desk that your computer is sitting on is energy and the molecules within the desk are in motion. They are moving very, very slowly, but they are moving. Make no mistake about it. As a matter of fact, the very first impression that you get when you meet new people is their energy vibration.
Everything you see, hear, taste and smell is permanently recorded in your brain. Likewise, every emotional experience that you have is also recorded in your brain and the cells of your body.
Holding on to these emotional experiences can be extremely detrimental to your physical health, and can create a disruption in the flow of energy through your body. We call this disruption DIS-EASE, impaired immune system or chronic disease.
Many people have written about the mind-body connection of disease. The emotions that most often cause disease in the body are fear, anger, guilt, and resentment. When held for a long time, these emotions can eat away at the body’s tissues and create infections, inflammation, tumors and cancers.
One of the fastest ways to begin the healing process is to clean up the negative energies and thoughts that plague your daily life. One of the ways that we have people do this in our seminars is to give them a homework assignment. The homework assignment is to write the following story:
My name is________ and these are the things that have affected my Mental, Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Health.
This assignment is to be written in longhand and in as much detail as possible. It can be 5 pages or 50 pages, the choice is yours. The longer, the better.
Many people see themselves as their disease in order to get themselves more attention. You can learn more about this in the “Spirituality” section of this Website, but suffice to say that it is your Pseudo-Self and your “Mini-Brat” that are in charge here.
I always encourage my patients to not identify themselves as their diseases. I hear people say, “I am a diabetic,” or, “I am overweight,” or, “I am a survivor of sexual abuse,” or, “I have cancer.” By doing so they are telling their bodies and all of the cells therein, to affirm that this is who they are, and to act accordingly.
As an alternative, you could say, “Right now my body is experiencing ________________ and I am dealing with this issue in such a way as to effectively, rapidly and permanently rid myself of this disorder.” Instead of identifying yourself as a disease, you’re just making a statement that describes the situation you’re in and that you’re dealing with it.
I suppose it would be appropriate to at least touch on the statement “What you focus on… expands.” This is a true statement. If you don’t believe it, next time you have a headache, focus on the headache and see if it doesn’t get worse. Since what you focus on expands, maybe you should try focusing on the things that you really, really want and not the things that you don’t want. Pay attention to your thoughts, as they control the direction of your life.
When you find things going wrong with your life, you might want to ask yourself the following questions: Why am I thinking this? Is this what I really want? If this situation were to turn out the way I wanted it to, what would be the outcome?
Take the power of your mind and your thoughts and create the life that you want. When you find yourself having counterproductive thoughts … Change them … Now! Don’t wait! Don’t wait for New Year’s Eve to make a resolution. Every day is a new day. The past does not equal the future. The canvas of your tomorrow is totally blank. You can paint on it any future you wish. Any future is possible.
Please do not expect your family physician to understand the connection between your thoughts and your illness. They are not trained in medical school to understand, nor deal with, your emotional issues and how they might relate to your physical illnesses. Drugs are not designed to treat the underlying causes of the illnesses. Any illnesses. So taking drugs for depression won’t make the depression go away, it will only make it so you don’t feel the depression (if you’re lucky). But drugs do nothing to deal with the underlying causes of your depression. Therapy is another way to deal with psychological issues, however, from what I have seen, the sessions take a long, long time and rarely produce the result of ridding the person of the underlying causes of their psychological disorder.
We have found that many people let go of psychological issues that have plagued them for years and years by attending just one of our Compass for Life seminars. For more information on our seminars, please review our “Seminars” page on this Website.
